Amami Oshima — Between Nature and Tradition

September 2026 | Amami Oshima, Japan

In September, I spent several days with my family on Amami Oshima, an island in southern Japan known for its subtropical forests, beautiful coastline, and distinctive cultural traditions.

One of our memorable experiences was trying dorozome, a traditional mud-dyeing technique used in the production of Oshima Tsumugi silk textiles. Watching my son participate in the process was a wonderful reminder of how traditional knowledge can be passed down through simple, hands-on experiences.

We also spent time exploring the island’s beautiful coastline. The clear, warm waters offered an opportunity to go snorkeling, where we encountered sea turtles swimming peacefully in their natural habitat. Seeing these animals so closely was one of the highlights of our stay.

Another memorable experience was attending a local festival. We had the opportunity to meet and interact with local residents, offering us a glimpse of the island’s community life beyond its natural beauty. These encounters made our visit feel more personal and meaningful.

What stayed with me most was not any single activity, but the combination of nature, tradition, and everyday human connections.

Travel sometimes reminds me that meaningful experiences do not always require extraordinary events. They can be found in simple moments — learning something new, encountering wildlife, or sharing time with people whose lives are different from our own. Amami Oshima was a beautiful place to experience these moments together as a family.
